Mabe Community Open Space

Guided by local voices. Rooted in nature. Open to all.

Mabe Community Open Space transforms two unused parish-owned fields into a welcoming, nature‑rich landscape for residents. Guided by community engagement and a light-touch design approach, the project balances ecological restoration with spaces for gathering, growing and quiet enjoyment. Native planting, meadows, rewilded areas and community facilities come together to create a resilient, inclusive and distinctly local place.

The Brief

The parish sought support in shaping a long-term vision for two fields that were previously owned by Cornwall Council and devolved to the Parish for community use, aiming to create a shared space that celebrates nature while offering opportunities for social activity, food growing and outdoor events. The brief called for a sensitive, sustainable approach that enhances biodiversity, uses local materials, and reflects community priorities through meaningful engagement and phased, achievable delivery.

Our Response

The emerging design adopts a gentle, landscape‑led approach, working with the site’s existing character and enhancing it through native planting, meadows, rewilded areas and new habitats. The fields are zoned to balance active community uses — such as growing spaces, informal performance areas and a modest multi‑use shelter — with quieter, nature‑focused zones for wildlife and reflection. Materials are natural and locally sourced, with accessible paths formed from compacted granite and timber and stone used throughout.

The proposed shelter incorporates renewable energy, rainwater harvesting and flexible openings to support year‑round use. Developed through well‑attended engagement events, the scheme reflects local aspirations and will be delivered in phases, with initial tree planting anticipated in Winter 2025/26.
