Regeneration | Place Transformation

A new civic heart for Falmouth’s waterfront.

Falmouth Church Street

Church Street car park occupies one of Falmouth’s most significant yet underused waterfront sites. Long dominated by parking, poor access, and contaminated ground, the area has struggled to contribute positively to the town centre. The project reimagines the site as a vibrant public waterfront, creating new connections, improved maritime facilities, and a high‑quality public realm that strengthens Falmouth’s identity and sense of place.

The Brief

Falmouth Town Council appointed the design team to explore options for transforming the Church Street site into a community‑focused waterfront destination. The brief called for improved public realm, enhanced access to the water, flexible event space, maritime facilities, and lightweight development that respects heritage constraints and contamination. The project forms part of a wider ambition to elevate Falmouth’s profile and reconnect the town with its harbour.

Our Response

The proposal reshapes Church Street into a welcoming, accessible, and resilient waterfront that prioritises people over parking. By retaining the existing ground structure and using lightweight buildings, the design responds to contamination constraints while enabling new activity along the water’s edge. A generous public promenade forms the heart of the scheme, creating space for events, informal gathering, and everyday enjoyment of the harbour.

Improved access routes reconnect the site with Church Street and Fish Strand Quay, while new maritime facilities support small‑scale commercial fishing, visiting craft, and future pontoon infrastructure. The design strengthens the relationship between the town and the water, softens the site’s hard edges, and enhances views across the estuary. Together, these interventions deliver a placemaking‑led regeneration project that restores civic value to a prominent waterfront location.
